RUSTINGTON AND DISTRICT
Newsletter Autumn 2016
I was supposed to write a Summer Newsletter, however, as things sometimes go, time has overtaken me. Building work, grandparent duties, and visitors now over and done with, I thought it is time to get an Autumn Newsletter out before it turns into an annual event only.
An exchange visit took place with a delegation of 15 people arriving from Künzell on the 6th of June. The newly elected Bürgermeister, Timo Zentgraf, and his wife Sabine were with the party, as well as Vera Schneider, an Intern for the last term before the summer holiday in the Rustington Community Primary School.
We had a varied programme for our visitors which was enjoyed by all. Timo Zentgraf said in a speech that all he had been told about England in the past was wrong:
“Yes. You do drive on the left hand side of the road. But the food was fantastic and the weather could not have been better”. I think that this statement kind of sums it up. I am glad that we were able to change some of their preconceptions.
In order to continue to prove that English food is excellent, I would like to compile a book of recipes as a gift to our German partners when they plan to visit us again in 2018. For this purpose I would welcome your contributions. Please select 3 of your own favourite recipes and send them to me. If there are any stories attached to them, let me have them too. That should make interesting reading. Please don’t forget that all measurements need to be metric. I hope to compile the book in both languages so that we may benefit from it as well.
The BBQ in July had to be cancelled due to our hostess having a broken ankle and arrangements were going to be a bit difficult, but there is always next year.
On the 24th September we held a quiz night in the guide hall which was well attended. We had a professional quizmaster and a game of card bingo during the break after our fish & chips supper. It was good fun and the winning team of 6 walked off with a bottle of Rotkäppchen each.
On the 29th October we invite you again to a shuffleboard evening. As usual, it will be in the Guide hall for a prompt 19.00 hour start. The entry fee will be £7.00 for members and £8.00 for non-
We are planning an Advent celebration in the Woodlands Centre on the 27th November in the afternoon with Glühwein, mince pies, and mulled apple juice. There will be a performance by the U3A choir “Songbirds” with some of your favourite Christmas songs and Carols. The entry for this event will be £3.00 and children are admitted free of charge.
Our last event for this year will be a Reindeer race on the 3rd December in the Guide Hall, again at 19.00 hours. The supper will be a German sausage with potato salad. The entry fee will be £7.00 for members & £8.00 for non-
The year will be coming quickly to an end after the last event and it will be a countdown to Christmas.
We have many members whom we do not see often, which is a shame. It is good to catch up with you all and these events are good fun. Do come and share these with us. We would love to see you.
