RUSTINGTON AND DISTRICT

TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Rustington

Künzell

History

Rustington Parish Council, in September 1999, agreed to set up a “Twinning” between the communities of Rustington and Los Altos in California, USA. This was in response to a very enthusiastic approach from Los Altos who wished to establish a relationship with Rustington. In 2002 the Council, again in response to an enthusiastic approach, agreed to set up a second “Twinning” with the Community of Künzell in Germany. The independent Rustington and District Twinning Association was established to pursue the aims and objectives of these twinning links, to promote friendship, cultural and business interests . The Association recognizes that nothing but good can come from meetings between people of different nationalities who wish to exchange ideas freely, and who seek common interests and experiences.

Rustington Community Primary School in North Lane has joined and is already promoting ideas with a Primary School in Germany.  Darlington Court Nursing Home has also joined and is twinned with Kursana Domizil in Künzell.

Sadly, the twinning arrangement with Los Altos came to an end in 2017, when the City of Los Altos decided to cease twinning with all 5 of its Sister Cities.  This was largely because the committee members retired as they got older, and the committee could not continue.  We still retain contacts on an informal basis.

In 2017, Rustington received an approach from the village of Livré-sur-Changeon in Brittany.  This seemed like a good opportunity to satisfy the known desire of a number of residents for a twin town in France.  In response to articles in local media, people came forward and formed a committee to investigate the possibility.  Unfortunately, it was found that the two towns were not a good match in terms of size and facilities, so the Parish Council had to reluctantly decline the request.

We are always looking for young people interested in the German language who would like to join a Germany family during the holidays (including Half-Term) as part of an exchange visit, to learn, brush up or extend their knowledge. For older students, work experience opportunities are available and can be arranged. The Association organised a memorable day out to London on 15 May 2012 for a group of German visitors from our twinned Community of Künzell.  The trip included coach travel from Rustington, a tour of London with a Blue Badge Guide, a picnic lunch, and a boat trip to Greenwich. There was a Fish and Chips supper upon return to Rustington

We are a self financing organisation, but are grateful for a subsidy from the Parish Council towards the expenses incurred when our Twinning Partners come to Rustington. The current annual membership cost is £7.00 per individual, £12.00 per couple and £15.00 for a corporate member
